He was freed around 8:30pm following the court’s decision to grant him bail at approximately 12pm on Tuesday. His lawyer, Mujahidul Islam, confirmed the bail.
On July 19, Noor Nabi was detained along with protesting students while attempting to enter the JnU campus to request permission for a march demanding quota reform.
He was arrested at the main gate of the university and found in possession of 12 grenades, leading to charges of vandalism.
Initially, Noor Nabi was picked up from the Kotwali police station area within the university campus but was later transferred to Shahbagh police station where a case was filed against him.
He faced charges under sections 4(b), 5, and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act and section 15(3) of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
According to the case statement, he, along with three others, was arrested at 1:05pm on July 19 opposite the Sheikh Jamal National Tennis Complex in Shahbagh, with 12 cocktails allegedly recovered from his possession.
However, a review of video footage from the time of Noor Nabi’s arrest shows he was apprehended unarmed on the Jagannath University campus at 12:11pm on July 19.
The indictment inaccurately states that he was arrested in Shahbagh with cocktails in his possession, even though no bag was found with him, and the footage does not support the claim of his arrest in Shahbagh.
Regarding his release, Noor Nabi’s advocate, Md Mujahidul Islam, stated that the bail was granted through standard court procedures.
After the magistrate signed the bail documents, Noor Nabi was subsequently released from jail.
